In San Diego, we’ve seen SDG&E apply significant restrictions to the rebate programs over the past few years. In 2021, we will see substantial changes to the rebate programs! While their program is still valuable, in this post, we update you on the latest changes to their program and also provide you with some tips on how to maximize your SDG&E lighting rebates.
How is the SDG&E Large Commercial Program changing?
California’s Investor-Owned Utilities (IOU), including Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) have partnered together to create a new midstream program that will take effect in the summer of 2021.
Details of the new program have not yet been released, but we know that lighting rebates will be moved to a statewide midstream program, while other technologies will remain under the large commercial program.
Are SDG&E commercial rebates for LED Lighting worth it?
Do you need to replace your current lighting? Are you interested in saving money and becoming more efficient? Take advantage of the current SDG&E rebate program by replacing your inefficient fluorescent high bay lighting with LED fixtures, which can result in a 70% energy reduction.
- SDG&E offers a $20-50/high bay to install LED fixtures.
- SDG&E also offers rebates for tube replacements, paying out $1 per tube for types B and C.

Does my facility qualify for SDG&E Renewable Energy Rebates?
Currently, SDG&E does not offer solar rebates for commercial or industrial facilities. If you do own a commercial facility and are looking to help your company meet its sustainability goals, you will definitely want to read up on the Solar Investment Tax Credit.
The solar tax credit is a great opportunity to drive down the renewable investment cost and can be applied to both photovoltaic and battery storage technologies. You can also apply the ITC to the cost of a new roof if it is required to support renewable energy technology.
CA also offers incentives for installing battery storage through the Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP). Batteries must be charged by a renewable energy resource to access the SGIP.
