Volkswagen Releases Mobile EV Charging Robots

Electric vehicle owners may no longer have to stress over looking for a charging station, thanks to Volkswagen’s mobile charging robot.

Volkswagen recently released a prototype charging robot that can drive itself to a vehicle and communicate with it. The robot opens the charging socket flap of the vehicle and brings a trailer with a mobile energy storage device to charge the car.

Volkswagen officials say the robot will allow EV charging to be possible in different parking facilities, parking spaces and underground car parks.

When fully charged, the robot carries 25 kWh of energy. They are equipped with cameras, laser scanners, and ultrasonic sensors.

According to a press release, Volkswagen is installing a total of 36,000 charging points throughout Europe by 2025.
